Lenny Bennett
Bennett Racing patriarch Lenny Bennett passed away on 12th March at the age of 86.
Lenny will be remembered by racers and the like from years past, as he was the Crew Chief of the Phantasm Ford Pop which we very successfully raced in the 1980s. Also, of course, he was a father to five, grandad to fourteen and great grandad to seven. A truly great man, very dear to us all, who will be greatly missed.

1.Leonard David Bennett, born 2nd October, 1925 joined the Navy when he was just 17 years old. He met Pauline Dowdall during the war and married 7 September 1946. She was the girlfriend of his mate to begin with but they took a shine to each other and the rest is history as they say. The youngest of 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls, 3 sisters still survive Lenny.
2.This picture was taken in August, 1969 when Lenny was 43. Ken, the eldest of Lenny’s 5 children was getting married.
3.Lenny by the Ford Pop in 1984. He loved racing with sons and grandsons at Santa Pod and Avon Park race tracks. During the time we raced the Pop, another racer lost his life in a jet car, a crash which caused the whole body to fly off, almost killing a close friend of the family, had he not pulled her out of the way.

5.Lenny in his 80’s, standing in front of a memorial wall that meant a great deal to him. This was taken at Chatham Docks, a naval yard that brought back many memories for him, including some of his own navy training and a day out he thoroughly enjoyed. More than once was he heard saying “During the war…”
